The Pirelli calendar celebrates 50 years

This is a story that officially began in 1964 with a series of photographs taken by Robert Freeman in Majorca. The Pirelli calendar, a veritable institution and litmus test of contemporary aesthetic imaginary, is celebrating its first 50 years with special initiatives.

Preceded by an exclusive gala dinner where Sophia Loren was the godmother of the event, the exhibition for the fiftieth anniversary brought together 160 photos of the most important fashion photographers. Beauty was the protagonist, and month after month the most beautiful women in the world were its interpreters, from Jane Lumb to Adriana Lima, from Naomi Campbell to Laetitia Casta. The exhibition will remain open until the 23 and 24 of November at the Hangar Bicocca, where there will also be an exclusive preview of the 2014 calendar.

This is not strictly a new calendar, but the one from 1986 by Helmut Newton, which was never published. A rarity preserved for safekeeping in the company’s archives, which is being brought out today to celebrate this important anniversary. Between Montecarlo and Chianti, the photos portray the splendid Antonia Dell'Atte, Susie Bick, and Betty Prado.
